Travel on the nation’s only ‘S’ shaped bridge
The well-loved bridge in the historic coastal district of Hertford is the only S-shaped swing bridge still in use in the U.S. and you’ll encounter it here in North Carolina. It was built in 1929 to replace a drawbridge that provided easy access to downtown, and was given the S-shape name to describe the curved approaches connecting a skew road on either side of the Perquimans River. Many admire the bridge for its views and sentimental value and are vying to save the iconic structure from closing. It’s said the moonlight view from the bridge even inspired the 1920s song “Carolina Moon.”
